If God is good, why is there so much suffering?
This answer is a draft. It has not yet been reviewed by our scholars, and it may change.
The short answer
Islam teaches that this life is a test, not the final destination. Suffering is real and painful, but it isn't meaningless. God promises that no one is burdened beyond what they can bear, that ease comes with hardship, and that perfect justice will come in the next life. Islam doesn't ask you to pretend pain isn't there; it gives you a way to carry it.
This life is a test
The Quran is direct about why we are here:
He created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds. (meaning of 67:2)
A test only means something if it’s real. Hardship, loss and uncertainty are part of it, and so is how we respond: with patience, with compassion for others, and by turning back to God.
We will certainly test you with some fear and hunger, and loss of wealth, lives and crops. Give good news to those who are patient: those who, when disaster strikes, say “We belong to God, and to Him we return.” (meaning of 2:155–156)
God does not abandon people in pain
The Quran makes promises to people who are suffering:
- No soul is burdened beyond what it can bear (meaning of 2:286).
- With hardship comes ease; the Quran says it twice (meaning of 94:5–6).
- You may hate something that is good for you, and love something that is bad for you. God knows and you do not (meaning of 2:216; said about a difficult duty, but scholars apply the principle widely).
Much suffering is caused by people
God gave human beings real free will. Many of the worst kinds of suffering, such as war, poverty, injustice and cruelty, come from people’s choices. The Quran says corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people’s own hands have done (meaning of 30:41). A world with real freedom is a world where people can choose to do wrong, and where they are responsible for it.
Justice is not only in this life
Islam doesn’t claim everything is fair in this life. It teaches that this life isn’t the whole story. Every wrong will be answered, and every patient person rewarded, on a Day when nothing is hidden.
Grief is not a lack of faith
When the Prophet’s ﷺ baby son Ibrahim died, the Prophet ﷺ wept. When asked about it, he said that the eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we only say what pleases our Lord (Sahih al-Bukhari 1303). Feeling pain is human. Faith is what you hold on to while you feel it.
If you are going through something heavy right now, please don’t carry it alone. Talk to someone you trust, and get professional help if you need it. Seeking help is fully part of faith.
Explain it to a friend
Islam doesn’t say suffering isn’t real. It says this life is a test and not the end of the story. A lot of suffering comes from people misusing their free will. And God promises that nothing is wasted: every hardship counts, and perfect justice comes in the end.

2:286 Allah does not obligate anyone beyond his capacity. And pardon us, and grant us forgiveness, and have mercy on us. You are our Lord. So then help us against the disbelieving people.”

2:286 Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord!
