Does Islam force people to become Muslim?
This answer is a draft. It has not yet been reviewed by our scholars, and it may change.
The short answer
No. The Quran says plainly that there is no compulsion in religion (2:256). Faith that is forced isn't faith at all. Islam asks people to believe out of conviction, and Islamic law protected the right of Christians, Jews and others to keep their own religion.
What the Quran says
The clearest statement is in Surah al-Baqarah. Its meaning is:
There is no compulsion in religion. The right way has become clearly distinct from the wrong. (meaning of 2:256)
The Quran returns to the same idea again and again:
- God could have made everyone believe, so should anyone try to force people into faith? (meaning of 10:99)
- The truth has come from your Lord, so whoever wishes may believe, and whoever wishes may disbelieve. (meaning of 18:29)
- “For you is your religion, and for me is mine.” (meaning of 109:6)
Why forced faith doesn’t count
In Islam, faith (iman) lives in the heart. Someone who says the words of faith only because they are under pressure hasn’t become a believer in God’s eyes. The Quran strongly criticises hypocrisy: saying one thing while believing another. Forcing someone to convert would create exactly what Islam condemns.
What history shows
For centuries, Christian, Jewish and other communities lived under Muslim rule and kept their places of worship, their scriptures and their own religious courts. Ancient Christian communities such as the Copts of Egypt still exist today, more than 1,400 years after Muslims arrived. Muslim dynasties ruled much of India for centuries, yet most of India’s population remained Hindu.
Indonesia, today the country with the most Muslims in the world, was never conquered by a Muslim army. Islam spread there mainly through traders, teachers and marriage.
Did it ever happen?
History isn’t perfect. At times, individual rulers treated minorities unjustly. Muslim scholars regard such cases as violations of Islamic teaching, not examples of it. The standard to judge them by is the Quran’s own rule: no compulsion.
Explain it to a friend
Islam teaches that faith only counts if it’s sincere. The Quran literally says “there is no compulsion in religion.” And if Islam had spread by force, why are there still ancient Christian communities in Egypt after 1,400 years, and why is the biggest Muslim country, Indonesia, one that no Muslim army ever conquered?

2:256 There is no compulsion in Faith. The correct way has become distinct from the erroneous. Now, whoever rejects the Tāghūt (the Rebel, the Satan) and believes in Allah has a firm grasp on the strongest ring that never breaks. Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

2:256 There is no compulsion in religion. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. And he who rejecteth false deities and believeth in Allah hath grasped a firm handhold which will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower.

18:29 Say: (It is) the truth from the Lord of you (all). Then whosoever will, let him believe, and whosoever will, let him disbelieve. Lo! We have prepared for disbelievers Fire. Its tent encloseth them. If they ask for showers, they will be showered with water like to molten lead which burneth the faces. Calamitous the drink and ill the resting-place!
